Random thought while watching the first game of the World Series: why does the president of Taco Bell sound English? Is he English? It isn’t enough that we bastardize an entire country’s cuisine into some drive-thru ready crunchy tacos and artery-clogging Gordito? We can’t even get an American to run said bastardization?

Menno roundup: those crafty Mennonite socialists are driving our country to ruin

Wonder what it was about the Mennonite Church they didn’t like anymore?
Is it the same reason mountain lions are attacking the Amish?
After this last week, bet there aren’t very many Mennonite millionaires anymore
Oh man, I totally missed National German-American Day. Convenient it comes in October. Is there any better month to celebrate our German heritage?
First [...]

The best thing about these collection of tubes we call the internets — besides LOLcats and Harry Potter slash fiction — is that so much happens in real time. And nowhere is that more evident than during major events in our national and global lives; Iraq, earthquakes, hurricanes and, uhm, total global financial collapse. There [...]

A poem to keep in mind while watching CNN today
October 10th, 2008 · No Comments
I’ve posted this poem before but for some reason — watching the Dow do its funky chicken dance today while the G7 is currently meeting down the street from me to attempt to avoid a Global Great Long Depression and hearing angry voters let loose at GOP rallies with invective-filled speech — it came into [...]

So Urban Menno is slightly buzzed tonight (company dinner sharing a bottle of red wine) and that may not be the best way to watch the debates … but we’re going to give it our best shot.
I also started a little late so now it’s 9:10 now and I’m just getting started. I’m also watching [...]

All the pretty young things today don’t make any sense

So I thought I would start watching this Gossip Girls teevee show thingy that the kids are supposedly all into these days. So I did. And I understand none of it. And subsequently feel even older than I actually am.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on [...]

Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do?

Harrisonburg, Virginia — Two tween girls (definitely older than 11 but probably not older than 13) are walking down the path behind the auction building pushing a baby stroller (sibling? babysitting?). Young twenty-ish guy roars in on a motorcycle. He’s bad in that “if Levi Johnston were a Mennonite” way; bulging biceps, tight T-shirt, scruffy, [...]

Got a man in your life who’s been tempted by the kilt but put off by the fact that there are no pockets. Or isn’t Scottish?
No fear. The Utilikilt is here. A kilt for every occasion. An occasion for every kilt.
Watch the mock-u-mercials. They’re gold. Pure gold.

Play a little economic September madness
September 30th, 2008 · No Comments
Can’t keep track of who is buying what? Did you wake up this morning to find out that your bank, your credit card, your 401(k) and your mortgage are now owned by completely different people than they were last night? Confused about who the winners and losers are in this, the greatest economic collapse since [...]
