5 heartbreakingly romantic books

February 9th, 2010 · No Comments · 5 things, What's on my bookshelf

Because Valentine’s Day is coming and if we didn’t have classic literature to teach us about heternormative love and screw us up for any real relationships, we would have to use TV and movies instead.

Pride and Prejudice: It shouldn’t be romantic.  Mr. Darcy is a dick and Elizabeth Bennett is prickly and the perfect couple [...]

5 snowy books for a snowy day

February 2nd, 2010 · 2 Comments · 5 things, What's on my bookshelf

So all this strange white stuff falling around the streets this winter (and they are calling for more this week!) does put one in the mood for curling up on the sofa.  Accompanied of course by hot chocolate and a blanket with a book that makes you feel even warmer than you are.
The Snowy Day [...]

5 things that haven’t changed since I’ve been gone

January 19th, 2010 · No Comments · "Those shiftless Mennonites", 5 things

My inappropriate love for Lady Gaga and my love for  those that also love her
Pat Robertson is still alive and still full of that deep, insightful, logical commentary on major world events
Obama is still playing the long game and the congressional Democrats are spineless– which is driving the progressive left absolutely insane and into deep [...]

5 nice things about autumn

September 22nd, 2009 · No Comments · 5 things

In honor of the autumn (at least for us in the Northern Hemisphere) equinox.

Pumpkin bars.  Pumpkin bread.  Pumpkin whoopie pies.
Waking up with warm cats bracketing  you in bed.
Lightweight turtleneck sweaters.  Which I used to hate wearing but am now very fond of.  Go figure.
That dying afternoon sun which bathes everything in a warm golden glow.
Perfect, [...]

5 favorite Spirk mashups

August 18th, 2009 · No Comments · 5 things

I’m not ashamed to admit it.  I kinda like slash.  What’s slash?  It’s where you take two male characters who appear in film, TV or fiction together and imagine a fairly robust and certainly non-scripted romantic life for them.  M/M.  Get it?  Slash.
There’s all sorts of stuff out there.  Supernatural has some really weird, twisted [...]

5 movies that are even hotter than you

August 11th, 2009 · 2 Comments · 5 things, What's on the screen

It’s hot here in the former swamp that is now our nation’s capital.  Not as hot as it could be and I’m not complaining because the summer has actually generally been quite nice but August in DC is always August in DC, so therefore it is hot.
To make me feel slightly less hot though, here [...]

For John Hughes: If you leave, don’t leave now

August 6th, 2009 · 1 Comment · 5 things, What's on the screen

I don’t care how many Home Alone movies he wrote — and he’s even forgiven for the hideously awful Maid In Manhattan (for shame, Ralph Fiennes!) –  John Hughes will always be the god of 80s teen romances. Maybe all teen romances ever.  So as a tribute, here are my favorite John Hughes-written films.

5 reasons DC doesn’t totally suck in August

August 4th, 2009 · No Comments · 5 things, Urban living

Sure it’s hot and humid and the streets smell like trash and you don’t know anyone with a beach house (and the people you know with mountain cabins aren’t inviting you).   But August doesn’t have to be the worst month of the year in DC.  There are at least 5 things to be grateful for.
1.  [...]

5 cold soups for a hot summer day

July 28th, 2009 · 3 Comments · 5 things

No stoves, no ovens, no microwaves, no grills …  sometimes running the blender is the most heat you want to put off.  So here are 5 soups that require very little thought, almost no work and are perfect when the mercury begins to rise.

Gazpacho.  Everyone has a favorite recipe but if you haven’t done made [...]

5 songs of this summer from worst to best

June 23rd, 2009 · No Comments · 5 things, What's in my playlist

Last year at this time, we were listening to charming British songbirds and bisexual girls and about getting low, low, low, low. No such luck this summer. Nope. In fact, this summer has not yet produced the song that deserves to be playing on everyone’s car radio as they roll through my neighborhood. [...]
