Saturday spectaculistic: Of the making of lists, there shall be no end

December 27th, 2008 · No Comments · Popology

It’s the end of the year and time to figure out what went well in 2008.  So here’s a general roundup of how everyone else viewed the year in literature and art pop culture:

Rolling Stone liked Coldplay, Milk (and Slumdog Millionaire) and Beyonce.

Entertainment Weekly went for WALL-E and The Wrestler, The Colbert Report, TV on the Radio, M.I.A.,  and  Uwen Akpan.

The New York Times was all over Silent Light, The Visitor and Happy-Go-Lucky; Dancing With the Stars; Erykah Badu, Metallica, Lil Wayne and Jamey Johnson; and Toni Morrison.

The New Yorker liked Rachel Getting Married, Bon Iver, HomeThe View (the ladies rocked this year), Robert Downey Jr. and a whole bunch of artists that you and I have never heard of  because we are philistines..

Salon goes with Chop ShopGhost Town, 2666, Buying In while liking absolutely nothing on TV.

The Washington Post sticks with The Edge of Heaven, Kanye WestTaylor Swift, Tina Fey, and The Elegance of the Hedgehog (which has to win for best title of the year right?)

All this proves is that lists are good for nothing much more than arguing amongst yourselves.  So go off and discuss why Coldplay kept showing up everywhere (I thought people couldn’t stand them) and who this Jamey Johnson that everyone loves so much is and how can “Chinese Democracy” end up on one best list and another worst list and that fact that everyone loved Milk and it still won’t win Best Picture.   Ditto with WALL-E (poor ghetto-ed animated films).
