5 good movies about coming to America

October 21st, 2008 · No Comments · What's on the screen

Just for this season, when there’s going to be a lot of talk about what it means to be American and who is and isn’t a true American, it doesn’t hurt to remember that once upon a time, we were all immigrants.

  • In America: Oh America.  So full of promise and pain.
  • Maria Full of Grace: It’s a beautiful film.  And, in the end, it makes you believe in America.  Just a little.  Or at least believe the myth of it.
  • El Norte: I don’t know if technically this is a well-made film.  But it was the first film that showed me how much we are seen as a place of hope and opportunity and how poorly we live up to that promise in reality.
  • The Godfather, Part II: We love our rags-to-riches stories so much we give them Oscars.
  • The Joy Luck Club: schlocky, tear-jerking chick flick that is not possible to watch without sobbing ceaselessly.  If you are a girl, watch it with your mother.  If you are a guy, either watch it with your hag or don’t watch it at all.

There’s a whole bunch I’m leaving out.  Feel free to leave suggestions in the comments.
