Jesus was a community organizer

September 4th, 2008 · 1 Comment

By my count, there were at least six mocking comments made about community organizing in last night’s speeches [Mark Ambinder says it was four].   Which, in retrospect, may not have been a good idea. Here’s the reaction:

McCain canceled a photo op at a Habitat for Humanity project today. Yes, the same Habitat that happens to be one of the largest community organizing groups out there.  Maybe not a good idea to mock the people that are currently building and rebuilding houses along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast?

Daily Kos and HuffPo commentators remind us that Jesus Christ was “the quintessential community organizer.” Politico commentators overthink it.

Obama and McCain are scheduled to appear at a September 11 forum to “discuss their views on the role service will play in America if they are elected.”  Time is going to moderate and CNN is going to broadcast live.  Submit your questions. See the questions currently submitted.

By the way, the Mennonites have some service opportunities in Alaska.  Stuff like working with abused women, Habitat for Humanity, the Food Bank … you know, elitist stuff.

Oh, and turns out there’s this government agency that exists almost solely to provide community organizers to communities.  You may know of it.  AmeriCorp?  Turns out there’s some of those in Alaska too.

I was a bit miffed by that recurring theme too, being an MVS alum in Kansas City (still there, btw), but the best response was from John Stewart: “so to all you people out there trying to make the world a better place… F### YOU!” I just about fell off my chair laughing. Well-said, sir, well-said.
