With the dog days of August, ovens are rendered overkill. Perfect summer meals should require no baking at all and minimal cooking. So here are 5 perfect summer foods:
- bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches (it has to be good bacon — none of that turkey bacon shit — and good tomatoes and no iceberg lettuce please).
- gazpacho (there’s a million different ways to make this; wars have been fought over whether bread crumbs are essential).
- tomato, fresh mozzarella and basil sandwiches (Pesto spread will also work instead of actual basil. And make sure you are using good bread or there’s no point.)
- corn on the cob (I could eat nothing else for supper some days).
- fresh peaches (so ripe and jucy that they burst when you bite into them).

I’ve had the last three all within less than a week and if it weren’t for me hating to cook bacon, I would have probably done the first one too. Luckily, the Ukrops around here sell local tomatoes, sweet corn, and peaches. The peaches are fantastic. Have you ever tried donut peaches. They’re like candy. Try them.

we had corn on the cob from Marvin Miller the other evening, and talk about candy! the corn was just perfect-perfect taste, perfect texture.
however, your mother bought apricots which also looked perfect, but we found out differently when we ate one. tasteless as paper. hopefully they will turn into something more pleasant after being canned.
