OMG, ur like sooo old

July 29th, 2008 · 4 Comments

How old am I?  So old that JCPenny is mining my precious, precious memories of the greatest teen movie of all time to sell back-to-school clothes.  At first I thought it was some Disney, High-School-Musical-like remake of the movie and then kinda sighed in relief that it was just a commercial. Clearly, although the commercial seems to be aimed at the young ‘uns, its actual market is their parents.

The good news is that the present appears to be more racially diverse and less stoned than the mid-80s.

OMG. I saw this ad right before the Dark Knight movie started and I was very bitter. Sad thing is I don’t think teens will know what it’s about so all the add will do is serve to piss us 30 somethings off. I’ve sworn off the store for 6 months because they just couldn’t be clever on thier freakin own.

I don’t know if my teenage daughter accurately reflects current youth (God, I hope not), but she and her friends discovered The Breakfast Club without my help, and loved it.

That doesn’t make a clothing line less wrong, of course. It’s just that some marketing genius might have figured out there could be a BC revival going on…

If you think it’s depressing to be old enough to have your memories mined, try be old enough to have your teenage daughter be part of it. :)

And what’s with the crappy remix of Don’t You Forget About Me?

Every once in a while, I’ll Netflix an 80s movie to see if its still watchable. And Breakfast Club holds up amazingly well.

Which is probably due to how great the movie is and also a sad commentary on how much the high school experience hasn’t fundamentally changed in 25 years or so.
