Today is the 60th anniversary of a racially integrated military. An odd post for a Mennonite to make? Probably. After all, I’d prefer that there wouldn’t be any military at all. But if we are going to have one (and so far, my side isn’t winning the overall battle here so I’m kinda resigned and all), I’m totally for the idea that our military should practice the ideals of freedom and equality it vows to uphold.
And that’s why the repeal of the hideously awful, soul-crushing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy matters. And why should you care? Because if our Commander-in-Chief is going to send out our military to defend liberty and life and the pursuit of happiness around the globe, surely it isn’t too much to ask that the men and women serving in it have those rights already.
The House Armed Services Committee is debating it right now. Which means that our next president is probably going to act on the issue.
