Inspired by the TV critics who said that rumspringa should be a rum-based drink, I present to you 5 worthy Mennonite titles (? nouns, things, don’t know what to call them) that would really work as cocktails. Send me a suggested recipe and I’ll gladly post.
- Schleitheim Confession
- The Blaurock (Has to have blue curacao in it. Has. To)
- The Dirk Williams
- Munster Rebellion (Jagermeister-based?)
- The Two Kingdom Theory (something dark on the bottom and light on the top where they sit suspended and not mixing together.)

“Two Kingdom Theory” sounds like a good name for a jazz band.
For that matter, “The Quiet of the Land” could be the name of an ambient music group.
Can’t think of any cocktails. Anabaptist could be non-alcoholic spring water from a cave in central Europe.

A jazz band name … that’s excellent.

“The Amishman” (just pure, simple, unworldly Jagermeister)
“One-horse buggy” (not sure what it would have in it, but it would be 1 shot so as to not confuse it with the slightly stronger “Two-horse buggy”)
“Catherine’s Manifesto” (again not sure what all it would include, but Stolichnaya would be the main ingredient, or maybe the only ingredient?)
“4-part harmony” (you guessed it, 4 ingredients, all alcoholic? that blend to create a new taste while still maintaining their individual parts)
“The blue hymnal” (also blue curacao based? and then you have to have “The red hymnal” in the cocktail menu, too!)
I could sit here and think of names all night, but coming up with the actual recipes is much more difficult . . . I think we need to make a trip to the neighborhood liquor store because the current offerings in our liquor cabinet don’t really do this project justice.

Then there is “The Peace Maker”, the primary ingredient being Everclear blended with milk and honey, consumed under your own grapevine. If that doesn’t make ya peaceful, nothing will.

My apologies to those who suffered and died hideous deaths. After considering the history, I found this to be a good deal less amusing. God bless Blaurock, Dirk Williams and the rest.

Kathy, those are some great names, I like the hymnal and 4 part harmony one. Actually coming up with the mixers would prove to be difficult.

@Roger: it isn’t a slam on Blaurock and Williams. Honestly, if we had a drink named after them Mennonites would probably remember and honor them more often.

Oh come on! Is it even possible to have graduated from EMU and NOT know who Dirk Williams was?

Actually, it’s Willems, aka Willms, unless you’re planning to anglicize those good Dutch/German names, coming from one who can trace her ancestry, literal and spiritual, back to 16th century Netherlands. Although sadly there are many who claim the literal and/or spiritual ancestry who don’t have a clue who Blaurock & Willems were. That’s why those of us who do know need to keep telling the stories, which communicate truth with infinitely more power than spouting off doctrine or theology. Do I get an amen!
