Obama’s very good, faith-filled, come-to-Jesus week

July 7th, 2008 · No Comments · Politics

Our Obama has been a busy man of God.

Well, he technically isn’t talking about just God … last week, it was supposed to be a focus on values.  But because it is impossible in this country to talk about values without talking about God (since we are such a Christian nation and all that), it essentially boiled down to the week of faith.

Late last month, James Dobson got everyone primed by remarking on an old speech of Obama’s, thereby insuring that the press would spend a lot of extra time on Obama’s values (good thinking, Dobson).

Then, Obama unveils his approach to “faith-based” organizations and government.  In a nutshell, he likes the idea, he thinks it was poorly executed by the current administration, it wouldn’t mean that religious-based organizations could discriminate in employment (although he doesn’t say how that would be enforced) and federal dollars will only go to the secular programs of religious organizations.  People get excited.  Other people get nervous.

This comes the day after he throws out some remarks about patriotism (which, in a “Gods, guns and guts” country, fits into the week just fine).

He does a little weeble-wobble on abortion, he releases an ad on Christian radio, he hangs out in small-town America for July 4th.

Then, he ends the week by speaking on his personal faith journey to the national denominational gathering of African Methodist Episcopalians … where he uses Jesus language way better than McCain ever will.

So what to make of all of this?  The progressives are annoyed (or pissed), the moderate evangelicals are getting excited, the moderate secularists are thrilled and Montana?  It could be competetive — for the first time in a long, long time.
