I’d like to extend an invitation to Chief Justice John Roberts, along with his buddies Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas and Alito, to come hang out in my neighborhood some late, hot summer night. Then maybe they can explain to me why now — rather than just worrying about the usual craps players, the bored teenagers, the drug dealers waving firearms around — I also to have worry about people who are carrying guns around to protect themselves from the crazy people.
The odds of my getting shot randomly just increased I believe.
I understand, I really do, that this wasn’t so much a discussion of DC’s gun ban as it was a referendum on the Second Amendment and what it actually means to “keep and bear arms” — the court (or at least the 5-4 majority) thinks that it means an individual’s right. I’m not a constitutional lawyer, I’m not a judge, I’m just someone who sits in my back porch, hearing the guns shots and driving by the memorials, thinking there’s already too many guns around.
