I remember when the peace majors at Manchester College(Brethren) effectively protested the security guards being equiooed with those three foot long ‘Mag’flashlights. They claimed that they were clubs in disguise. A number of the staff took to referring to the ‘Killer Mag Lights’ but the students stuck to their pacifist principals and won. I think having security guards implies the willingness to use force, even if it is unarmed force. And refusing to have armed(with whatever) guards but being willing to call the local constabulary, well, it may not be hypocrisy but it sure is treading a fine line, aint it?

Your last item made me laugh. Did you ever read the romance novel that came out in the 80’s about a woman who got a job teaching at Goshen College and fell in love with an Amish man? The GC library has a signed copy from the author writing under a nom de plume. My mom read it and said, “This book is so unrealistic. The main character could have never gotten a job the easily at Goshen College.” The title escapes me, but if I ever find it, I’ll let you know.
