5 favorite teen romances: 1980s version

March 6th, 2008 · 3 Comments

  • Breakfast Club: just pure awesomeness. Maybe the best teen movie ever. Ever. The gold standard by which all teen movies should be judged.
  • Footloose: Although this is a super, super-close second.
  • Sixteen Candles: way, way better than Pretty in Pink. Jake Ryan … the most perfect movie man ever (do you know he’s now a carpenter in Pennsylvania or something like that … that makes him even more perfect)
  • Some Kind of Wonderful: OK, maybe this movie doesn’t hold up very well anymore. Man, the whole pleated shorts with collar-up, button-down shirt is just hideous. But maybe not as bad as the cropped leather jacket. But I still love it (maybe for this scene alone) — cause I’m a girl.
  • The Sure Thing: John Cusack, Tim Robbins singing showtunes, a sweet love story … what’s not to love about this movie

I know I was never older than 10 years old during the ’80s, but I do remember watching a few of these with you and I’d have to say that 16 Candles was one of my favorites.

What about Say Anything? I didn’t watch that until I was in my 20’s, but perhaps the finest scene involving a boombox.

I do like Say Anything …. but for some reason (maybe because it was released in 1989) it just doesn’t feel as 80s as the other movies… why is that?

But that boombox scene is, hands down, maybe the most romantic teen movie scene — hell, any movie scene — ever

love 16 Candles–great lines that movie has . . . “oh look, Fred, she’s gotten her boobies . . . and there so perky” and then there’s the Donger saying “oh, sexy girlfriend” (chic with the neck brace) and falling out of the tree. hys-ter-i-cal people. makes me want to go see if it’s playing on cable right now just to watch it again.

don’t ask me how I remember these things . . . I can’t wait until you give me an excuse to start in with Steel Magnolias . . .
