I use to love the Oscars. The hype, the glamour, the awful, the tasteless, the bad, the glorious, the heart-warming .. loved it all. Except, the last few years, I think I’ve loved it a little less than I used to. And I’m not the only one. Even the gays might be abandoning it.
There’s been a gradual decline for me over the years; the 2000 dissing of Russell Crowe’s incredible performance in The Insider for Kevin Spacey in American Beauty. Or Gladiator as the 2001 Best Picture. But I permanently lost respect for the Academy the year they voted Crash Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain. And the fact that Heath Ledger didn’t win is just mind-boggling. I saw all of those performances on the big screen that year and they were great. But Ledger’s Ennis was beyond great … it was transformative. And he’ll never have the chance to get another one. And that is the problem with rewarding a career over a singular performance.
Having said all that, I’m still going to watch it on the teevees and I’m still going to read everything I can get my hands on and I’m still going plunk down my money and ballot. I’m just less emotionally invested in it. There are lots of ways to make the thing more interesting, many of which involve alcohol. Mine is going to be liveblogging. So if that drinking game or the sex is keeping you from watching every bloated minute, make sure to check in here at UrbanMennonite on Sunday night.
If you’re looking for information, history, lists, gossip, predictions, triva, and just general Oscar-lusciousness, here are some sites that might fill the aching void I know you have:
