Kanye West and Amy Winehouse were big winners at the Grammy Awards Sunday night, except for the weird Herbie Hancock win. I mean, seriously? A tribute album to Joni Mitchell wins over Kanye, Amy, Vince Gill and the Foo Fighters? Is anyone under the age of 90 voting in that category?
Confession time: I can’t get Kanye’s “Stronger” out of my head even after hearing it nonstop for the last six months of 2007. I still think it’s the best song I heard all year (hey, “you could be my black Kate Moss tonight” was –hands down — my favorite freaking lyric of the entire year).
You probably know almost nothing of Amy other than her no, no, no, yes, yes, yes, no, no, no, yes, yes, yes rehab story but girl is one hellava singer. Everyone references “Rehab” (because it’s that weird art-imitating-life-imitating-art Janis Joplin thing) but I actually think there’s at least three other songs on that album I like better, “You Know that I’m No Good,” “Back to Black” and “Love is a Losing Game.” Go, download them from Amazon.com immediately (it’s only $0.89 cents for god’s sake).
Here’s a little taste if you need convincing:
